Suite
Polignac
The Polignac Suite is representative of the Restoration period
(1815-1830), following the fall of the Empire and preceding the
Revolution of 1830. It is named for the Polignac family, a family which
played a prominent role in French history. The Polignac family are
friends of family. The Restoration is a time when members of the
Kergorlay family, two brothers, Louis-Gabriel and Florian de Kergorlay,
were very involved in politics, both becoming Peers of France. Florian
was an uncompromising legitimist, dubbed “the strict voice.” He was the
father of Louis de Kergorlay, close friend of Alexis de Tocqueville. The
Polignac suite, with its period furniture and fabric, is an accurate
representation of rooms of that time. The room is on the ground floor,
overlooking the pond. With its two bathrooms, also overlooking the pond,
it is a gorgeous room full of comfort, charm, and authenticity. |

Suite
Faudoas
This suite is situated on the ground floor with a view on the pond. The
main room has been redecorated with a Pierre Frey fabric. The suite’s
theme, and its colors pink and cream, match the antique wallpaper which
has been preserved in the small adjoining room. This room is named in
honor of the young Eleonore de Faudoas, friend of Charlotte Corday.
Eleonore was arrested at Canisy on June 15, 1794 with her father and her
aunt and guillotined on July 14 (13 days before the 9 Thermidore)
because she had had the bad idea of writing to her sister Justine “my
little dog Jacobine just gave birth to five little Jacobins”, showing
that during certain periods of history humor must be dealt with
cautiously... To complete the picture this room used to have a “wooden
shoe bathtub,” an exact replica of the one in which Marat was killed by
Charlotte Corday. But because such a bathtub is uncomfortable we decided
to replace it with a beautiful copper bathtub made in the artisinal
workshops of Villedieu les Poeles. |

Chambre de
la Tour
The Tower Room, on the ground floor, is a very romantic room with a view
on the two ponds. Its decorations and furnishings are mainly
representative of the 18th century. The bathroom, one of the first
installed in the chateau at the end of the 19th century remains as it
was then. It is thus naturally retro! (Queen size bed.) |

Suite l’Academicien
So named because this room has for a long time been the favorite of the
academician Pierre-Jean Remy, great long-time friend of Canisy and the
writer of a wonderful article about Canisy. You can read his article in
the section “livre d’or,” the golden book. This is a very beautiful
suite, and like the Louis XVI room and the Empire Room, is situated in
the grand gallery with a view on the gallery’s grand perspective. The
paintings and furnishings give the room the complete atmosphere of the
18th century. The bathroom is one of the first redecorations of my wife
Marie-Christine who wished to introduce a little more baroque style in
the chateau, which she had found up to that point ... too formal! |

Chambre Louis XVI
Situated on the grand gallery of the
Renaissance wing, you reach it by the stairway of honor constructed in
1588 by the architect Francois Gabriel. And by the grand gallery of
Ladies. The height of the ceiling gives the room a spacious feeling, a
feeling further confirmed by the huge king size bed, created by joining
two beds of the Louis XVI period. All the furniture and pictures are
from the period and several portraits of Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette
fit naturally in this beautiful room. Among these portraits is a
reproduction of the famous portrait of Marie-Antoinette at the
Conciergerie peinted by Kucharski (then at the “garde national”), an
original of which my family has kept because of our common line of
descendence (on my mother’s side) with the great Malesherbes, the
courageous defender of the philosophers of the 18th Century
Enlightenment in France, against the king, then defender of King Louis
XVI against the revolutionaries (for which he was guillotined). The
pretty retro bathroom occupies a space which was formerly intended to be
the W. C. for this room but was always used as a reception room . The
wallpaper with 18th century motifs is especially luminous and the room
gives an impression of sweet nostalgia. |

Chambre Empire
The
Empire Room is a faithful representation of a room of the First Empire
(1804-1814), and its spectacular bathroom is a reproduction of the one
in the mansion of Josephine of Beauharnais —wife of Napoleon
Bonaparte. This careful attention was worth it because the family of
Marie-Christine de Kergorlay, nee de Percin, originally came from
Martinique and was related to the family of Josephine de Beauharnais.
The choice of the wall paper (with bees on a white background) and of
the fabrics conforms perfectly to the standards of the time. All the
furniture is from the Empire period. The Empire Room is situated, like
the Louis XVI Room and the Academician’s Suite, on the second floor of
the Renaissance wing, and opens onto the grand gallery with a view on
the grand perspective of the chateau. |

Chambre Années 90
"La Chambre Années 90"
epitomises perfectly the minimalist and bald of the 90's. A spectacular
bathroom all furnished with marble, no bathtub, only an immense
shower...At present this bathroom is completed, but the room is still
decorated in a 18th century style. The modern decoration will take place
later on. |

Chambre Années 30
And since the 20th century
belongs to history now, two rooms have been newly decorated representing
this past century. La "chambre 1930" with its spectacular Art Deco
bathroom - replica of the existing bathroom at the Ministry of Foreign
Affairs in Paris created for the venue of the King of England in the
thirtie's - will represent "les années art deco". This room will be an
evidence of that unusual period as far as architecture and design are
concerned. |
